A senior stopped filing and the benefits went quiet. Can filing bring them back?

2026-10-24 · 6 min read · Tax Everyday, Vaughan

Yes for some benefits, and not automatically for every dollar. The Guaranteed Income Supplement is income-tested from the T1. If the return is missing, Service Canada does not have the income figure and the supplement is interrupted. The GST/HST credit and the Ontario Trillium Benefit stop for the same reason: no return, no calculation. Old Age Security is a different program. A missing T1 does not, by itself, mean OAS is cancelled. Read the letter. The program named at the top is the one that stopped.

Filing the missing years is how the income test gets a number again. Retroactive payments follow each program’s own limits. Waiting another year to “gather everything” can age a month of GIS out of the period that can be paid. File the years the letter mentions.

What a quiet senior year usually contains

Most of these returns are short. The damage is the gap, not the complexity.

  • T4A for pension, OAS, and CPP. CRA usually already has these slips.
  • Bank T5s. A missing T5 rarely changes the outcome as much as a missing return does.
  • RRIF withdrawals. They are income, and they are on a slip.
  • Rent or property tax, if the Ontario Trillium Benefit is part of why you are filing.
  • A spouse who also stopped. GIS and credits often need both returns.

These are the $90 years, if they are actually simple

A straightforward senior year at Tax Everyday is $90 plus HST. If the only issue is that 2022 through 2025 were never filed, say that when you book. Bring the benefit letter and any Notice of Assessment you can find. If a year has a rental, a business, or a large capital gain, it is quoted instead of forced into the $90 price.

A family member can help gather the slips. The return is still the senior’s return. Upload them through the personal tax form or the file drop, and call (905) 499-2964 if the My Account access is the part that is stuck.

Short answers

Will filing late reduce my OAS?+

OAS clawback depends on income, not on the fact of being late. Filing reports the income that was always reportable. Not filing does not hide that income forever, and it can interrupt GIS, which is the benefit most seniors in this situation are actually missing.

Can my daughter book and drop the slips for me?+

Yes. She can book the time and upload documents. You still authorize the return before it is filed. We need your details, not only hers.

Want this applied to your file?

These notes are general. A return is prepared only after we see your slips.
